Jerry O’Brien is a well-known advocate and Chatham native who has spent more than 20 years advocating justice for his clients. He believes not only in preserving but improving the civil justice system, by ensuring open access to legal channels for all citizens. He has appeared as an advocate before trial and appellate courts as well as administrative tribunals throughout Ontario.His practice focuses on protecting the rights of those who have suffered losses as a result of injuries, death, insurance or commercial disputes.Jerry is also dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the civil justice system, to advance the principles of access to justice and full and fair protection of the legal rights of all citizens.
A graduate of McGill University and the University of Western Ontario Law School, Jerry is also a second generation lawyer. Articling for a large Toronto firm specializing in civil litigation, Jerry was admitted to the Bar in 1981 and returned to Chatham to practice with his father, Harold O’Brien, QC.He has always taken an active interest in his profession, as a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Bar Association, Kent County Law Association, Court Liaison Committee, Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Advocates Society, where he served on the Board of Directors from 1996-1999. He was also a member of the Southwestern Regional Committee of the joint Committee on Court Reform.
Jerry is equally committed to his home community – as a Board chair of Chatham’s St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, as a director of the Brain Injury Association of Chatham-Kent, and as a past director of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation.
In his leisure, Jerry enjoys sailboat racing. He is a past Commodore of the Erieau Yacht Club and a member of US Sailing.
He and his wife Maria have two children and live in Chatham.
